Swiss motorways and the annual vignette
Switzerland requires a motorway vignette for cars on the national Autobahn / autoroute network. The standard product for private cars is annual (calendar-year style validity under Swiss rules) — there is no cheap short-trip motorway vignette like in neighbouring countries.
Daily volumes are high on corridors through Zurich, Bern, Lausanne/Geneva, and Alpine approaches. Peak ski and summer weekends can be congested in the tunnels and on Gotthard approaches.
Tunnels and special tolls
Some Alpine tunnels and special crossings (for example certain long tunnels) charge separately from the motorway vignette. Check your route if you use major tunnel corridors.
The vignette covers the general motorway network but does not replace every special infrastructure fee.
Digital vs sticker
Switzerland offers a digital e-vignette linked to the plate as well as the classic windshield sticker. Digital is convenient for visitors who prefer not to affix a sticker.
Buy before you enter the first Swiss motorway ramp — border approaches funnel quickly onto tolled network sections.
Tips for Switzerland
If you only need a few days, you still need the annual product for motorway use — or stay on non-motorway roads (often slower through the Alps).
Enter the plate correctly and keep confirmation. Fines for driving without a valid vignette are steep compared with the vignette price.

Frequently asked questions
Is there only an annual Swiss vignette?
Yes. Switzerland is the only European country that does not offer daily or monthly vignettes. Even if you're transiting for an hour, you must buy the full annual vignette at CHF 40.
How long is the Swiss vignette valid?
The annual vignette is valid for 14 months — from December 1 of the previous year through January 31 of the following year. So a 2026 vignette bought in December 2025 is usable until 31 January 2027.
What's the fine for driving without a Swiss vignette?
CHF 200 fine, plus you still have to buy the vignette (CHF 40) — total CHF 240. Swiss enforcement is strict, especially at border crossings.
Does the Swiss vignette cover the Gotthard Tunnel?
The Gotthard Road Tunnel (A2) is covered by the vignette — no extra charge. But the Great St. Bernard Tunnel (to Italy) has a separate toll (~CHF 30 one-way).
Can I use the Swiss vignette with a trailer or motorcycle?
Both need their own vignette. Motorcycles pay CHF 40 (same as cars), trailers pay CHF 40 separately from the towing vehicle. The digital e-vignette is linked to the specific license plate number.
What if I switch license plates?
The e-vignette follows the plate, not the vehicle. If you have an interchangeable (wechselnummer) plate used on multiple vehicles, the vignette applies to all of them. If you replace your plate entirely, you need a new vignette.
