Czech motorways and expressways
The Czech Republic requires a digital dálniční známka on signed motorways (dálnice) and selected expressways in the eDalnice system — including most of the D0 Prague ring except short toll-free segments.
The network is densest around Prague and along major corridors toward Germany, Austria, Poland, and Slovakia. Peak summer and weekend traffic can be substantial on D1 and ring approaches.
Who needs a vignette — and who does not
Cars and light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 t need a vignette. Motorcycles and trailers are generally exempt.
CNG/biomethane and eligible plug-in hybrids can use reduced eco tariffs if you select the matching vehicle type at checkout.
What drivers should know
The vignette is digital and linked to plate plus country of registration. Cameras enforce across the network — buy before you enter a signed motorway.
You can often choose a future start date (up to a few months ahead on the official system). Make sure the start time covers your first entry.
Practical tips
Ordinary roads without motorway signs do not require a vignette. When unsure, look for the motorway symbol on green signs.
Keep confirmation until you verify the plate at edalnice.cz. Wrong plate or wrong country code is a frequent reason checks fail.

Frequently asked questions
Do motorcycles need a Czech vignette?
No. Motorcycles, trikes, and trailers are exempt from the Czech vignette requirement. If you're riding a motorcycle through Czechia, you do not need to buy anything.
What is the fine for driving without a Czech vignette?
Fines can reach up to ~CZK 20,000 (≈€820). Misuse of exemptions (e.g., driving an unregistered electric vehicle on a claimed exemption) can trigger higher penalties up to €6,900.
Is the Czech vignette fully digital?
Yes, since 2021. No physical sticker — the vignette is linked to your license plate and country of registration. Enforcement is camera-based across the motorway network.
How fast does the vignette activate?
If you pay by card, the vignette is valid immediately upon payment confirmation. You can also choose a future start date (up to 3 months in advance).
Do electric vehicles pay less?
Yes. Fully electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles are exempt but must register for an exemption with the Czech authority. Natural gas and plug-in hybrids get reduced rates.
Does the Czech vignette cover the city bypass around Prague?
Most of the D0 (Prague Ring) requires a vignette. A few short sections near the city are toll-free. Use official route signs — if a "motorway" or "expressway" symbol is shown, the vignette is required.
