Austria’s motorway network at a glance
ASFINAG operates roughly 2,200 km of Autobahn and Schnellstraße. That network carries a large share of north–south Alpine transit between Germany, Italy, and Eastern Europe — several hundred thousand vehicles a day on the busiest corridors in peak season.
A time-based e-vignette is required for cars and light vehicles up to 3.5 t on this network. Ordinary federal roads without motorway or expressway signs remain free of the vignette.
Tunnels and section tolls (not covered by the vignette)
Several Alpine routes charge a separate section toll on top of the vignette: the Brenner motorway (A13), Arlberg tunnel (S16), Tauern (A10), Karawanken, Gleinalm, and other special stretches. Pay at the booth or via video toll where offered.
If your route crosses the Brenner or another special tunnel corridor, budget for those fees separately — the standard e-vignette does not include them.
What drivers should know before buying
The digital vignette is linked to your license plate. Cameras check plates automatically; driving without a valid registration typically starts with a substitute toll from about €120.
Short-term digital products (1 day and 10 days) activate quickly. Longer passes bought directly from the operator can have a delayed start under EU cooling-off rules — check the start date before you leave.
Practical vignette tips for Austria
Enter the plate exactly as registered (including country of registration). A typo means the vignette will not match the car cameras see.
Keep the confirmation email until you can verify the plate in the official ASFINAG check tools. For multi-day Alpine trips, map whether your route needs extra tunnel passes before you depart.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a vignette in Austria?
Yes. Every vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes using Austrian motorways (Autobahn) or expressways (Schnellstraße) must have a valid vignette. This includes transit trips — even passing through for 20 minutes requires one.
What is the fine for driving without a vignette in Austria?
The substitute toll is €120, payable on the spot. If not paid, penalties can escalate up to €3,000. Automatic cameras scan license plates, so getting caught is essentially guaranteed.
How fast does the digital vignette activate?
The 1-day and 10-day digital vignettes activate immediately after purchase. Unlike the 2-month and annual versions (which have an 18-day legal waiting period when bought directly from ASFINAG), short-term vignettes are usable right away.
Does my vignette cover the Brenner Pass or Arlberg Tunnel?
No. Several special routes require additional tolls: Brenner Pass (A13), Arlberg Tunnel (S16), Karawanken Tunnel, Tauern Tunnel, Pyhrn Autobahn. These are paid separately at toll stations. The regular vignette covers the rest of the network.
Can I use the vignette if I change my license plate?
No. The digital vignette is linked to a specific license plate number. If you change plates (new car, new registration), you need to purchase a new vignette. Store your confirmation email — you may need it to claim a partial refund from ASFINAG in case of a total loss.
Do motorcycles need an Austrian vignette?
Yes. Motorcycles need their own vignette (at a reduced rate). The digital version is linked to the plate, so it works the same way as for cars.
