Slovenia’s motorways and tunnels

DARS operates Slovenia’s motorway and expressway network — a compact but busy system linking Italy, Austria, Croatia, and Hungary. Daily volumes are high on the Ljubljana ring and coastal/Karawanken corridors in summer.

The digital e-vinjeta (category 2A for typical cars) is required on marked motorways. The Karawanken tunnel and some special sections may involve additional arrangements beyond the standard vignette product.

Categories that matter

Category 2A covers most passenger cars. Taller or heavier light vehicles may fall into 2B — check vehicle height/weight before purchase.

Buying the wrong category is a common mistake and can leave you effectively uncovered when cameras check.

What drivers should know

The e-vinjeta is plate-linked and digital. Short weekly products are popular for holidays; longer passes suit residents and frequent visitors.

Enforcement is automated on the network. Fines for driving without a valid vignette are significant relative to the product price.

Practical tips

Plan Alpine and coastal weekend traffic — queues near Ljubljana and border approaches are common in peak season.

Match the validity start to your border crossing time and keep confirmation until the trip ends.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a 1-day Slovenian vignette?

No. The shortest option is 7 days (€16.00 for category 2A cars). Slovenia does not offer a daily vignette — even for transit trips, you must buy the weekly one.

Does the Slovenian vignette cover the Karawanken Tunnel?

No. The Karawanken Tunnel at the Austria-Slovenia border has a separate toll paid at the booth. The regular vignette covers every other motorway and expressway in Slovenia.

What are the vehicle categories in Slovenia?

Three: Category 1 (motorcycles and trikes), 2A (cars up to 3.5 t with height under 1.3 m above front axle), and 2B (larger vehicles / buses). Most passenger cars fall under 2A.

Is the Slovenian vignette fully digital?

Yes, since December 2021. No sticker — the e-vinjeta is linked to your license plate. You can verify validity at evinjeta.dars.si before travel.

What's the fine for driving without a Slovenian vignette?

Fines start at €300 and can reach €800. Enforcement is camera-based on motorways and expressways. Checks are also done roadside by Slovenian police.

Do I need a vignette for Slovenian coastal expressways?

From 1 January 2026, the H5 and H6 coastal expressways are exempt from the vignette requirement. All other motorways (A1, A2, A4, A5) still require one.
